Fitness – Glasgow Man Club https://dev.glasgowmanclub.com be a better man Sun, 19 Aug 2018 10:14:05 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.1 Benefits of speed training https://dev.glasgowmanclub.com/benefits-of-speed-training/ Sun, 19 Aug 2018 01:24:19 +0000 http://dev.glasgowmanclub.com/?p=133 We incorporate a lot of speed/sprint work in our Glasgow Man Club sessions, here are a few reasons why –
  1. Body Composition – Sprinting, speed work or high intensity Interval training has been proven to be a great fat burner and muscle builder. You only have to look at a sprinters physique, compared to a marathon runner.
  2. Improved endurance and work Capacity – As sprint training, can help increase muscle and fast twitch muscle fibres; you will become faster and more powerful. This will lead to a faster ‘comfortable pace’ when running, cycling etc. This will also help increase your work capacity.
  3. Heart and Lung Function – High Intensity Training will improve both your heart and lung efficiency, which will not only help while training, this is also a major factor in keeping you healthy for every day life.
  4. Better results, in shorter time – You will experience greater results, doing short, intense work periods, than steady state exercise can provide.
  5. Whole body workout – Propelling your body at speed, requires most  parts of your body, so everywhere gains improvements. It also helps create a mental toughness that will, give you more confidence in your ability to do anything.

Why you can’t beat barbell training https://dev.glasgowmanclub.com/why-you-cant-beat-barbell-training/ Sun, 19 Aug 2018 01:23:45 +0000 http://dev.glasgowmanclub.com/?p=131 Barbells are one of the best pieces of equipment for training with. Most big compound exercise can be done with a barbell. From Deadlifts, Bench Press, Olympic Lifting, Squatting or Pressing, the barbell will allow you to take these exercises from a bare barbell up to whatever weight you need.

Most barbell exercises are compound movements (using a lot of body parts working together). The barbell is very simple tool, so it is easy to learn the basic lifts quickly.

With GMC coaching, anyone without any debilitating pre-conditions can learn most barbell exercises quickly. Olympic lifts may be an exception for some, but progressions can be made, quickly on these skills too.

The weight is fixed and stable, so the tool itself is less likely to deviate from a normal range of motion. This is an advantage for the barbell because, when under heavy load, you do not want the barbell to deviate at all. Another advantage of the barbell is that unlimited progression is possible because you can always add more weight to the bar.

Of course, every lifter has their own genetically pre-determined maxes that they can handle but being able to add more weight easily makes progressing with this tool very simple.

6 Reasons Why Kettlebells Are Frickin’ Awesome https://dev.glasgowmanclub.com/6-reasons-why-kettlebells-are-frickin-awesome/ Sun, 19 Aug 2018 00:02:51 +0000 http://dev.glasgowmanclub.com/?p=120 Kettlebells are another highly versatile tool, we will be using a lot of during GMC sessions, for those that don’t know, a kettlebell is metal ball with a handle, if you can imagine that. They generally come in two forms, competition kettlebells, which are made of cast steel and are all the same physical size, no matter what they weigh, these as the name suggests are used in Kettlebell competitions.
Then you get Russian kettlebells, usually made of cast iron, these get larger in size as the weight goes up.
Kettlebells have been around for hundreds of years and for very good reason – they work.
Here are some of the reasons why –
  1. Improved conditioning and work capacity – Kettlebells are ideal for creating high intensity, complexes, moving through various exercises, without having to change or put weights down, so making you work harder. This will massively improve your work capacity.
  2. Posterior chain work – Using traditional kettlebell exercises, like swings and snatches, you will be learning how to fire up your posterior chain muscles, glutes, hamstrings, working them in a ballistic, powerful way, that can’t be replicated with a lot of other fitness tools.
  3. Working your body unilaterally – When using single kettlebells, your body is put under different stresses, from, say using a barbell, as the weight ids offset, it makes your body work harder to maintain balance, leading to a stronger midsection, better structural integrity, which will carry over to most sports and other training methods.
  4. Grip Strength – As most strength exercise, bench press, squat, shoulder press etc have weight pushing against you, grip strength is not really tested. While doing kettlebell swings and snatches, the kettlebell is pulling away from you, so grip strength is important and quickly gets improved. On saying this a lot of kettlebell exercise require you to grip the kettlebell with minimum effort, to allow it to move, without ripping your hands or banging it off your wrist.
  5. Portabilty – As kettlebells are small, you don’t need much room to use them. They are ideal for taken with you for outdoor sessions.
  6. Fun – Kettlebell training can be used very effectively for active recovery. One of the best methods for this is kettlebell juggling. Which we will cover at GMC. This is not only fun but, also helps improve technique at the same time

10 Reasons why “Strongman Training” gets results https://dev.glasgowmanclub.com/10-reasons-why-strongman-training-gets-results/ Sat, 18 Aug 2018 23:50:25 +0000 http://dev.glasgowmanclub.com/?p=85
  • It will get you strong (D’OH !) – Do not mistake strong for getting big. Yes you can get big and strong, if that’s your goal, but you can also get epically strong without getting huge, we will teach and coach you, whatever your goals are.
  • It will make you more functional strong, for everyday life – Using Tyres, yokes, farmers handles, atlas stones, beer kegs etc will give you ‘Old School’ strength, a raw man strength, lifting and moving weights, you never dreamed possible.
  • Movement Patterns – Covering all aspects of human movement – pulling, pushing, squatting, walking with load, rotating, carrying unbalanced, odd loads over distance.
  • Posterior chain speed and strength – Lifting atlas stones, beer kegs, flipping tyres will build a dynamic powerful posterior chain, which will carry over to your other training, life and any sport you play. (maybe not darts though)
  • Carry over – Strongman training has a massive carry over to both day to day function and other training modalities, barbell work may not improve your strongman, but yoke carries etc will improve a lot of your barbell work.
  • Every Man can do Strongman – Strongman training is quick to coach and learn. Its scalable to all levels, you can and will be lifting/carrying more weight than you think on your FIRST session. It’s as simple as you’ll lift it, carry it, pull it, hold it, till you can’t.
  • It has been around forever – Men carrying, moving, lifting odd, heavy objects is in our genes. We are built to do this, its in our nature. Look at the proper Old strongmen lifted huge weights, without machines or YouTube videos, they just lifted shit, then lifted heavier shit.
  • There may be blood sweat and tears – It will test you, push your buttons and boundaries, take you to, where you thought your limits were, then take you beyond them. Blood, sweat and tears – maybe. Smiles and job done satisfaction – definitely
  • Take it Outdoors – As all the Equipment we need is movable, we can take it outdoors. Train in the sun (once a year in Glasgow) no limitations of walls, you can carry loads for as long as you physically can. Get fresh air into your lungs. Especially if you’re stuck in an office all day, We’ll get you out and moving
  • It’s FUN – Yes fun, Strongman training is something you will love, you will be counting the hours till the sessions, and you will love it. Do not mistake fun for easy, this will take you to your limits, this will try and break you, but this will also make you smile, like no other training you have ever done. When was the last time you laughed after being on the leg extension?
  • OK – I lied – there are more than 10 reasons. Proper grip strength – Carrying, pulling, loaded walks will create a vice like grip, no more panics when handed a jar with a stuck lid – the only worries you’ll have is not breaking the jar
  • Its fucking cool – In this selfie, facebook, Instagram world, who doesn’t want to have awesome photos ( we will have a professional photographer at sessions occasionally)of them lifting big shit, flipping tyres, carrying twice, three times your body weight. Yeah you know you do!
  • Its Short and very sweet – Sessions don’t take long, but are highly effective, you will see results and feel the effects quickly.
  • What did you do this weekend ? – Yeah, you will be able to brag to mates in pub, Monday morning at work etc A lot better than “ I managed 3 x 10 reps on pec deck”
  • It’s a great team builder – You will, at times do partner or team work. Motivating, being motivated, inspiring, being inspired, driving, being driven by partners, team mates these sessions will push you even further, but also give you faith and strength as a team.
  • It makes you better – Stronger, faster, more confident, a better team player, a better individual, a greater sense of belief, plus make you laugh and smile more
  • No one ever said that they felt too strong ! – enough said !
